Society KyrgystanDrinking Water to Be the New Norm Here
A massive water infrastructure project in Kyrgyzstan intends to provide universal water access and improved sanitation nationwide.
“Over the next decade, the program will provide access to clean water and sanitation to one million Kyrgyz citizens – directly improving quality of life, strengthening human capital, and boosting prosperity for generations to come,” says Hugh Riddell, World Bank Group Country Manager.
An initial $121 million was set forth by the World Bank to launch the project and is alone expected to improve the lives of over 450,000 people across 126 rural villages in the Kyrgyz Republic. Piped water and additional and improved sanitation facilities are part of the plan, as are upgraded hygiene facilities in schools and other public institutions. The Kyrgyz Republic Water Supply and Sanitation Universal Access Program is only one of 23 projects the World Bank supports within Kyrgyzstan. In total, $1.2 billion will be allocated to the nation to help end poverty and support the modernization and development of various sectors nationwide.
