Female Superhero Fights Sex Crimes in Comic Series Promoting ‘Mighty Girls’

A comic series in India has recently published its third free e-book, about a superhero who uses her powers to fight sex trafficking and the stigma survivors face.

Thousands of people – mostly poor women and children – in India become victims to traffickers who promise them good jobs before selling them into modern slavery. The “Priya’s Shakti” series is aimed at spreading a ‘mighty girls’ message in a fight against male dominance.

“I think as artists and creators it is our social responsibility to raise awareness and give voice to those who need it the most,” says the comic book’s writer, Dipti Mehta.

“Comics are hugely popular with teenagers and young adults … we wanted to reach teenagers because they are learning about sexuality, gender-roles and sexual violence,” adds series creator and filmmaker Ram Devineni to the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “More importantly, we have given voices and put attention on survivors of gender-based violence.”

“Priya and the Lost Girls”, the third comic of the series, revolves around Priya finding all the women missing from her village – including her sister – and fighting the demon who led them to his brothel, to set them free.
