All-Electric Aviation Takes off with First All-Electric Commercial Plane

A Canadian airline company has just inaugurated the test flight of what is considered the “world’s first” all-electric, zero-emission commercial seaplane in Vancouver.

The company, Harbour Air, has partnered with engineering firm magniX with a mission to transform its existing fleet into fully electric commercial aircrafts. The test flight proved a pioneering step towards eco-friendly flying.

“This signifies the start of the electric aviation age,” says Roei Ganzarski, chief executive of magniX, who launched its propulsion system at this year’s Paris Auto show.

“Our goal is to actually electrify the entire fleet. There’s no reason not to,” says Harbour Air founder Greg McDougall. The fleet – consisting of over 40 seaplanes – are expected to begin their electric transformation after two years, once the e-plan is proven fully reliable and safe.
