Fossil Fuels Are No Longer Welcome Here

Britain has become the world’s largest economy to halt new oil and gas exploration, marking a historic shift toward clean energy and climate leadership.

“Closing the door to new exploration marks the beginning of the end of oil and gas in this country,” said Areeba Hamid, co-executive director of Greenpeace UK. “By standing firm on its promise, the government has shown genuine global leadership.”

Under the North Sea Future Plan, the government confirmed it will issue no new oil or gas licences, focusing instead on home-grown renewable power. Environmental groups hailed the move as a major milestone in the global energy transition. However, they called for more substantial investment in green jobs to ensure North Sea workers are part of a fair and secure clean-energy future.
