From Education to Health to Economy, This Country’s Ticking All the Boxes

Since gaining its independence 76 years ago, India has made huge progress, notably in literacy, economy, health, life expectancy, and sustenance, going from a mostly agricultural economy to the world’s fifth-largest economy.

In 1947, only 12% of the 340 million population knew how to read. From 1993 to 2021, as the population grew by 600 million citizens, the literacy rate went from 48.2% to 74.4%. Life expectancy was only 32 years old in 1947, more than doubling as of 2022.

Today, the average Indian no longer suffers from undernourishment. Infant mortality fell dramatically between 1960 and 2022 as children no longer suffered from malnutrition. And so, the Indian population grew, adding one billion citizens between 1948 and 2018. As for the wealth of the country, once restrictions to competition and commerce were removed, India began reaching growth rates of between 6% and 9% each year. The economy flourished as foreign investment flooded in: competitive industries in telecommunications, software, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, research and development, and professional services sprung.
