From Lions to Wolves, a Carnivore Comeback!

Decades of conservation efforts have restored a diverse array of carnivore species across Europe.

Many animals that used to be hunted and homeland taken are now seeing an impressive comeback. Brown bears have increased by 17 percent, wolverines by 16 percent, wild wolves by 35 percent, and golden jackals by 46 percent.

Previously, these carnivores endured thousands of years of persecution: the same kind that wiped out the sabretooth tiger and cave lion populations. Though many species boast an impressive comeback story, that of the Iberian lynx may take the cake: fewer than one hundred remained only 25 years ago, making it the planet’s most endangered feline. Today, its status has lessened to “vulnerable” as its population grows under protection laws. However, these conservation success stories concern some locals who fear for their livestock, with policymakers emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the rise and return of these carnivorous species is done sustainably and fairly, both for the animals and the local communities.
