Worldwide, the extreme poverty rate is lower than ever before, and should that trend continue, that rate could be down to 0% in no time!
A mere 9.4% of people live in extreme poverty with less than 2.15$ a day.
In the 1800s, a majority of people – 78% – were impoverished. With modernization came a drop in extreme poverty. After 1980, the rate dropped faster than ever before. In 2002, 26% of people lived in extreme poverty. By 2015, the rate had reached 11%; by 2022, it had fallen to 8.3%. Progress experienced a setback due to Coronavirus, but life continually improves for most people.
