Grandma and Grandpa Get Their Own Official Holiday

I was impressed to learn these days that the government of Bavaria has launched a delightful initiative: From now on every second Sunday in October Grandparents Day will officially be celebrated in the german free state.

I’m proud that my beloved Bavaria takes the lead with this decision and becomes the first german state to honor grandmas and grandpas with a special day – which exists in other countries such as the United States already since the Seventies.

Some people might say that a Grandparents Day is mostly a benefit for flower and greeting card businesses – but I think it’s a charming way to remind all of us what grandparents do every day for their grandchildren. Experts said that the 21 million grandparents in Germany not only spend lots of Euros for their grandkids, but also dedicate nearly four billion hours of their time – and kindness – per year.
