Huge Dedication to Make These Islands Greener

€1.6 billion has been granted to decarbonize the Greek Islands.

“The project will enable the gradual phase-out of polluting oil-fired plants, enhance the security of energy supply, and support the green transition of the Greek islands,” says Greece’s electricity transmission operator IPTO.

The money, primarily funded by the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme, will mainly support renewable energy and low-carbon technologies and phase out oil-fired plants. This green transition across the Greek islands will, alongside other measures already implemented, lead to a more sustainable future for a country that consistently remains at the top of the list of the world’s most visited countries. The project is set to potentially receive up to €3.8 billion, including the original allocation of €1.6, by 2032.
