Human Support in A Flood of Grief

With my husband and my teenage son, I live in a village in the German state Rhineland-Palatinate. I have always been a strong person who went through difficult moments with courage.

But last July suddenly a huge flood invaded our region and left a disaster. Like many others we became homeless. Our house was not habitable anymore. I lost my work as a podiatrist, as my office in the basement of the house was totally destroyed. We lost everything – I even hadn’t grabbed my handbag or my laptop, when we escaped from the flood in a hurry. Then my mother died, and also my beloved dog Winnie passed away. For the first time in my life, I felt paralyzed and depressed.

But then we experienced overwhelming support from friends and strangers. We could move into a tiny house with only one room, but it was a home. Then I received a small donation from a social organization to start my business again. Our life is still difficult, but I’m beyond grateful that we have survived and for all the support. Also, our new puppy manages to cheer me up again.
