Society CambodiaIncredible Progress in Landmine Clearance
Cambodia launched its mine clearance campaign more than three decades ago. Since then, more than 3,300 km2 of land across 15 provinces has been cleared, significantly improving the quality of life and the safety of more than 10 million citizens.
Through the Cambodian Mine Action Center, more than 273 km2 were cleared in 2024 alone, destroying 17,853 anti-personnel mines, 228 anti-tank mines, and 91,111 explosive remnants of war, leading to a dramatic decrease in casualties with numbers plummeting from 4,320 in 1996 to only 49 in 2024.
Since the launch of the mine-clearing campaign in 1992, 3,297 km2 of land has been declared mine-free, with 81% of this area dedicated to agriculture. The remaining 19% of cleared land has been allocated to essential infrastructure projects and other developments like housing, farms, schools, and health centers. Fifteen provinces, including Stung Treng, Kep, Prey Veng, and Phnom Penh, have been declared mine-free.
