Landfills Are Full, So No More Plastic Bags for Jakarta’s Shoppers

Indonesia is the second worst offender of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. But the nation is stepping up its game: starting June, single-use plastics will be banned from Jakarta’s street markets and shopping malls.

The capital city’s environmental agency highlights that Jakarta’s landfills have reached almost full capacity. In response, the city’s Governer Anies Baswedan has signed new regulations that includes the ban of latex, thermoplastic and polyethylene.

By summer, shopkeepers will have to provide eco-friendly bags or they would face penalties. The nation is now part of 74 countries who are banning plastic bags and another 37 that charge for their use.
