440-Million-Tree-Plan to Make Green Ireland Even Greener

The Irish government is set to plant 22 million trees a year in the Emerald Isle, the famous nickname for Ireland, until 2040, heading towards a greener nation that better tackles climate issues.

Reforestation – significantly important in Ireland, which is among the least forested nations in the EU – allows for more trees to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus reducing carbon emissions affecting the climate.

Scientists from the Crowther Lab of ETH Zurich, Switzerland noted in a report that if reforestation were to be realized in all the suitable 0.9 billion hectares of land worldwide, two-thirds of human-made carbon emissions could be captured. But Ireland’s plan to reforest isn’t only intended to fight climate change – it also includes other benefits, such as creating biomass for energy and increasing jobs in rural areas.
