Island Nation Celebrates a Sharp Decline in Homicide

The Caribbean Island nation of Jamaica has witnessed a 42% decline in murders, concrete proof that ongoing crime-fighting initiatives and police strategies are effective in protecting the population.

The latest national crime statistics released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force, 257 homicides have been reported so far in 2025 compared with 439 murders during the same period in 2024.

Reductions in murder rates have occurred in 16 out of the island’s 19 police divisions. The current national weekly average for murder stands at 13; last year, the average was 22 murders per week. Serious and violent crimes have also declined by 22%. The continued decline is attributed to increased intelligence-led operations, community-based policing, and strengthened inter-agency cooperation. Improving crime detection and prevention could not have been achieved without the support of citizens and the use of technology.
