Kids’ Health Comes First: No More Ads for Candies Here

A big ban on the advertising of unhealthy foods and drinks targeted at children has just been announced by Spain’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs, with restrictions on TV, radio, social media, website, application, cinema, and newspaper ads.

Consumer affairs minister, Alberto Garzón, cited alarming rates of childhood obesity in Spain, noting that it is a “serious public health problem,” with the Consumer Affairs Ministry adding that “In Spain, one in every three children is overweight or obese [due to] advertising.”

The advertising ban will be based on the World Health Organization’s standards for children and will include candies made with chocolate or sugar, cakes, cookies, energy bars, energy drinks, juices, and ice creams, among others. The new regulations will come into effect next year.
