Major Brands Switch to Zero Waste Packaging – Thanks to the Milkman Service

A new delivery service company has brought on board the world’s biggest brands on a “modern milkman” experiment that focuses on delivering – and taking back – zero waste, reusable packaging.

The service, called Loop, kicked off online a year ago, selling everyday products in returnable packaging that not only looks a whole lot better than single-use plastic, but that also keeps packages from ending up in landfills or the ocean. It has a significantly lower carbon footprint than the usual single-use packaging.

“Companies are looking for new ways to address packaging and reduce waste, and consumers are demanding it,” says Steve Yeh, project manager at the Nestlé-owned ice cream brand Häagen-Dazs. The brand has designed a special stainless-steel ice cream canister for Loop – and it’s now even taking its new eco-friendly packaging to over 200 of its stores.

The online store launched last May in and around Paris and New York City, and will soon expand to more areas internationally. It currently has over 150 products – including Tide detergent, Pantene shampoo and Nature’s Path granolas – and growing. Later this year, Loop will begin retail sales in major stores in the U.S., France, the U.K. and Canada.
