Use Public Transport, Luxembourg Tells the People: It’s for Free!

Luxembourg has a special strategy to reduce its congestion issues: as of March 1st, the country will make all its local public transportation entirely free of charge for both residents and non-residents.

The country – around 2,600 square kilometers in size with 600,000 inhabitants – sees approximately 200,000 people commuting to work in Luxembourg every day, which contributes to the heavy traffic jams in many areas during the mornings and evenings.

With the upcoming shift to free public transport, only first-class seating in trains will incur a fee. The government expects that with this new effort, people will choose buses and trains over cars more often, contributing to a steadier and cleaner flow of traffic.
