Let’s Plant 60 Million Trees to Celebrate 60 Years of Independence, Says Madagascar President

The president of Madagascar has pledged to plant 60 million trees to celebrate the nation’s 60th year of independence, as part of a mission to restore the ecosystem that’s been affected by climate change.

The island nation has such vast biodiversity that 90% of its wildlife isn’t found anywhere else in the world – so the country and its people take protecting the environment, which has been damaged in recent years, as a critical necessity.

“The government has the challenge of making Madagascar a green island again. I encourage the people to protect the environment and reforest for the benefit of the future generations,” said President Andry Rajoelina during the launch of the planting of trees in the district of Ankazobe.

The planting of trees will not only fight deforestation, but will also be key to reducing carbon emissions and improving the stability of the climate as well as the health of the citizens.
