Meet Peanut, The World’s Oldest Living Chicken

A 21-year-old hen has just been declared the world’s oldest living chicken.

“She’s healthy, and she’s spoiled,” says Peanut’s owner, Marsi Parker Darwin. But, surprisingly, the world’s oldest living chicken almost never made it out of the egg as she was born without her egg tooth – the part of the beak that allows chicks to break out of their eggs.

Darwin decided to let Peanut spend her first few years of life inside and fed her a diet of yogurt, grapes, bananas, and vegetables. Peanut was eventually moved outside to the coop with the rest of the chickens where she lived 13 years and produced many chicks of her own – many of which she eventually outlived. With Peanut’s old age, the Darwin family has decided to let her live inside once more and she often spends her time tucked into Darwin’s jacket while she does chores around the farm. Should Peanut reach 23 years and 153 days, she will set the new Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest chicken.
