Will Cows Eat Seaweed Soon to Help Fight Climate Change?

A new Australian company plans on commercializing a livestock feed additive made from seaweed which can reduce methane emissions by 80%.

The methan emission of cows is a substantial contributor to climate change, scientists found out. “This is a game-changer – not only for livestock production, but also for our environment – with the potential to create an entirely new industry, while supporting jobs in the Australian agriculture sector,” says Karen Andrews, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology. “This is an example of what can be achieved when industry and researchers work together to solve real-world problems.”

FutureFeed’s plans on taking care of all steps of the production, from cultivating the seaweed to supplying the industries. Its product should be available to provide for the beef and dairy market across Australian by mid-2021. The international markets will follow.
