New Milestone Sets the Pace for the Clean Transition

The European Union has adopted a binding target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, strengthening its pathway to climate neutrality by 2050.

“This landmark target will give industry, citizens and investors the reassurance they need for the clean transition,” said Maria Panayiotou, Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus.

The updated climate law builds on earlier commitments to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. It requires that at least 85% of emission reductions happen within the EU, while allowing limited use of international climate credits. The policy also introduces stronger frameworks for carbon removal, energy security and social fairness, providing long-term certainty for businesses and accelerating investment in clean technologies across all sectors of the economy.
