SocietyStudent Architects Help Build Five Million Low-Cost Homes
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has major plans to build five million affordable homes in rural, urban and peri-urban areas across the country over the next five years, with the help of student architects.
The student architects have designed the homes and will use local tools to keep costs low in a country where around one quarter of the population lives below the poverty line.
“Affordable housing is not just an issue in poor countries; it is an issue in nearly every country,” says Zaigham Rizvi, chairman of the federal task force on housing.
Rizvi explains that, upon proving successful, there will be plans to take the pilot projects to the next level, adding that multiple firms are eager to build the low-cost homes.
