Plan to Eradicate HIV by 2030 Takes Shape

The president of the United States unveiled its AIDs strategy to eradicate HIV for good on its territory by 2030, a plan that banks on financing research, addressing social issues linked to the epidemic, and improving access to treatment to all.

“We are within a striking distance of eliminating HIV transmission,” says President Biden. “The strategy takes on racial and gender disparities in our health system… to ensure that our national response is a truly equitable response. It’s a roadmap for how we’re going to put our foot on the gas and accelerate our efforts to end the HIV epidemic in the United States by the year 2030. That’s the goal.”

From 2015 to 2019, the rate of new infection fell about 8%, but Black and Latinx communities remain disproportionately afflicted – even more so among gay and bisexual men in those two groups, hence the need to recognize the role racism plays in the lack of access to medical services. The goal of “Ending the HIV Epidemic in the US Initiative” is to reduce infections by 75% by 2025 and 90% by 2030.
