“Please Change Your Plastic Packaging” Children Pled to Giant Toy Maker (and They Did!)

Following letters from children concerned about the use of single-use plastic bags to wrap the bricks, the toy company LEGO has decided to change its packaging to recyclable paper bags made with Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper.

“We have received many letters from children about the environment asking us to remove single-use plastic packaging,” says Niels B. Christiansen, LEGO Group CEO. “We have been exploring alternatives for some time and the passion and ideas from children inspired us to begin to make the change.”

Over the next three years, LEGO will invest $400 million “to accelerate sustainability and social responsibility initiatives.” The company sells bio-bricks made from sugarcane, but so far, they only account for 2% of the offerings. LEGO also has the program “Lego Replay”: customers can send their used bricks which are then donated.
