Prestigious College Newspaper Finally Has Its First Latinx President

The college newspaper of Harvard, one of the most prestigious American universities, has finally elected its first Latinx president in its 148-year history, an inclusive decision that shatters the glass ceiling in terms of Hispanic representation.

“I’m hoping that opening that door will allow it to stay open,” says Raquel Coronell Uribe, the 23 year-old history and literature student elected president of The Harvard Crimson. “That’s what makes me the most excited.”

Raquel Coronell Uribe served as a reporter covering police accountability, and as a social media manager and newsletter editor since she joined the paper. The 23-year-old student wishes that her election inspires Hispanic and Latinx people to take on more leadership roles in the years to come. According to a recent diversity survey, 12.5% of Harvard’s freshman class and 8.9% of the paper’s staff are Hispanic and Latinx students. The Harvard Crimson, one of the oldest college newspapers in the United States, is taking its second step in terms of inclusivity, equity, and representation after the election in 2018 of Kristine E. Guillaume, the first Black woman to lead the paper.
