Public Safety Milestone: Record Drop in Homicides Achieved

In the United Kingdom, London has recorded its lowest number of homicides since monthly records began in 2003, with killings in the first nine months of 2025 nearly 60 per cent lower than two decades ago.

“The number of homicides this year is the lowest in 22 years thanks to record investment, intelligence-led policing and vital prevention work,” said Mayor Sadiq Khan. “We’re making good progress, but one death will always be one too many.”

Between January and September, 70 homicides were recorded, a 16 per cent drop from last year and the lowest total of teenage killings since 2012. Knife crime offences also fell by 7 per cent, with hospital admissions for under-25s injured by knives down by 10 per cent. The city’s Violence Reduction Unit has supported over 450,000 young people through mentoring, youth clubs and diversion programmes. At the same time, London’s homicide rate now ranks below major European capitals, reflecting the success of long-term prevention and community safety initiatives.
