Reforestation in Brazil is in Full Swing!

One forest restoration program in Brazil has restored over 5,000 hectares of land in over 425 municipalities since 2016, while a second has planted over two million native trees since 2005.

The newer Conservador da Mantiqueira and older Conservador das Àguas are focused on saving and restoring Brazil’s natural resources both through natural regeneration and the planting of seeds.

“If we don’t take care, the water will end in 20 or 30 years. We have to think about the future, our children and grandchildren,” says Helias Alves Cardoso, a rural landowner who is an active participant in the project.

Alone, the Conservador da Mantiqueira has an end goal of reforesting a whopping 1.5 million hectares by the year 2030. “All this work is aimed not only to improve the environmental quality of the Indigenous land but also to sustain the survival of the Indigenous people in the long term,” says Adriana Kfouri, a member of the Conservator de Mantiqueira management committee and director of The Nature Conservancy’s Mantiqueira region. Together, the two projects are causing sweeping positive change across large parts of Brazil.
