Scientists Discuss Measures to Help Put an End to Plastic Production

To truly curb global plastic pollution, the world’s scientific community is adamant that recycling is not enough, going as far as proposing measures that could – and must – be put in place to prevent plastic from being produced in the first place.

Scientists believe that a ban on single-use plastic needs to be adopted, as well as product labeling requirements and financial incentives.

Since its invention in the last century, plastic is in almost everything we use. It became a popular manufacturing material because of its durability and longevity, making it an environmental hazard. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in 2010 alone, some 8 million metric tons of plastic were in the ocean. Many countries are already on board the ban on single-use plastic wagons. Adding labels and certifications to a product, thus increasing brand transparency, can improve overall consumer trust. If companies were required to state their composition and biodegradability status, consumers could make more sustainable choices. Also, by imposing a single-use plastic tax or offering financial incentives for using other materials, people and industries would turn to plastic alternatives for economic benefits. Recycling remains important, but not as much as finding ways to curb plastic production.
