Solar Cow makes farm laboring kids go to class instead

A solar power “cow” helps children from poor families in sub-Saharan Africa to swap cleaning up cowpats for lessons.

The Problem: Many parents rather have their kids work on the farm then send them to school. Solution: Let them come back from school with a reward for the entire family! First results are promising – kids in Pokot, Kenya, already attend school more regularly where the solar cow is offered.

South Korean solar company Yolk designed the device – and shaped it like a cow!  The school hands out power banks that are shaped like milk bottles. The power banks are fully charged and the end of the school day – ad the kids bring electricity back home – a rare and expensive commodity in many African rural areas. Usually a member of the household has to walk several hours to the next charging shop and pay to charge devices such as phones.
