EnvironmentSociety SwedenTaking Care of Our Environment: Recycling of Packaging Reaches Record Figures
Sweden is improving its recycling of packaging year in and year out, and 2021 saw record-breaking figures with an increase of over 50% from ten years ago.
“It is very gratifying that the packaging collection breaks records year after year,” says Helena Nylén, CEO at FTI. “Recycling is a small contribution that everyone can make, and when there are many of us who do it together, it has a big effect.”
Some 552,600 tons of packaging were collected in 2021, an increase of 6% from 2020. Nationwide, the overall collection of packaging increased by 55% since 2012. On a yearly basis, the largest increase is in paper packaging with 13% or 22,000 tons – or 18.9 kilos per citizen. As for glass and plastic, each citizen submits respectively 23.2 kilos and 9 kilos.
