This Frozen Land Expedition Could Help Us Prepare for Mars

Two British explorers have recently taken on an expedition across Antarctica, and NASA is tracking their journey as it might help humans to better prepare for the challenges that will arise on Mars.

“Much like the extreme conditions found on planets in our Solar System, Antarctica has an austere environment that is useful for a range of human and biological research,” as it is stated on Chasing the Light expedition’s website. “Justin [Packshaw] and Jamie [Facer Childs]’s mission will allow scientists to observe a rare scientific story of human adaptability, which will ultimately contribute to… human-centered space exploration.”

The 4,200 km scientific crossing of Antarctica is set to last 80 days, and the two men will travel by foot and on skis. They will record data about wind speeds, ice conditions, and radiation levels as satellites don’t orbit directly above the South Pole. On top of writing daily updates on a blog, they will wear smartwatches that record information about their health. With an average of minus 27 degrees Celsius – and minus 91 degrees close to the Pole – Antarctica’s weather is still milder than the one found on the Red Planet.
