Three Countries Join Hands to Stop Illegal Fishing

The United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States formed an alliance to share their technology and data in an effort to tackle illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, and improve the transparency of fisheries.

“Illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing is rife across the world, damaging ecosystems, impeding our ability to sustainably manage fish stocks, and contributing hugely to global criminality,” says Lord Zac Goldsmith, International Environment Minister. “This needs to end and I am delighted to join forces with the U.S. and Canada to launch a world-first global alliance to tackle this pervasive threat. Through collaboration, innovation, and transparency we can overcome this issue, and I urge other countries to come onboard.”

At the United Nations Ocean Conference, all three countries joined the IUU (illegal, unreported, and unregulated) Fishing Action Alliance, pledging to implement national and international laws meant to target IUU fishing, use innovative technologies, and increase the transparency of fishing data to impose better monitoring, control, and surveillance of fisheries, for example through the use of archives of satellite radar imagery from Canadian space technology company, MDA Ltd. A growing number of international partnerships – such as the Joint Analytical Cell (JAC), the International Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Network, and Skylight – are joining the fight against illegal fishing.
