Dogs in Arabia Munch on Leftovers to Curb Food Waste

A dog rescue center in Umm Al Quwain in the United Arab Emirates has partnered with hotels and food vendors across the nation to collect leftover meals from humans to feed their hungry canines.

Amirah William, one of the founders and owners of the Stray Dogs Center UAQ, explains the initiative’s three social responsibility goals: “Firstly, supporting animal welfare, by providing left over food for shelter and stray dogs; secondly, by helping to reduce the impact of waste on the environment; thirdly, community responsibility by helping to support the operation of the center in reducing its monthly food costs.”

The program goes hand-in-hand with the UAE Food Waste Pledge – led by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and signed earlier this year by hospitality businesses – in a drive to save around five million meals from waste by the end of 2020.

The center has received much support from companies and volunteers and aims to upgrade the weekly food collection to a daily task.
