95,000 Pieces of Waste, a Colorful Mosaic – and a World Record

Masdar City, a sustainable urban development in Abu Dhabi, UAE, has achieved the Guinness World Record for the largest mosaic made from recycled waste. The artwork measures 1,015 square meters and contains around 90,500 items!

“As a pioneer in sustainable urban community development, Masdar City will continue to lead in promoting best practice in waste management,” says Yousef Baselaib, executive director of Masdar’s Sustainable Real Estate. “This wonderful mosaic makes the sustainability debate more tangible and accessible through the universal medium of art, and demonstrates the commitment of the people of the UAE to protecting the environment.”

Locals in Masdar City and across Abu Dhabi participated in the project, from employees to schoolchildren. The mosaic represents the evolution of the United Arab Emirates, and aims to inspire locals and tourists to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste for the sake of the environment.
