GoT Star Goes Deep Into the Endangered Rain Forest, Says: “There Is Hope”

UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Nikolaj Coster-Waldau recently traveled to Peru with the UN agency on an investigative mission: uncovering the root of the fires in the Amazon, and what can be done to prevent future devastations.

The protection of the Amazon rainforest – which covers the majority of Peru – is vital as it holds around 20% of the river water on Earth. Indigenous and local communities are known to be the caretakers of the Amazon, but many of the communities in Peru are poor and face a significant lack of basic resources, giving them little choice but to deforest their land to farm and earn a living.

“The problems indigenous communities face in the Amazon are a window into not just the impacts of climate change, which have intensified over the past 20 years, but one of its biggest causes: [social] inequality,” says Game of Thrones star Coster-Waldau, who met with several indigenous communities in the Peruvian Amazon. “If we don’t address inequality on a global scale, then we won’t be able to fix climate change. It’s complex, but there’s hope. We have the resources, we have the technology. We just need to do it. We need to come together as individuals, as communities, as nations. And if we do that, we can solve the problem.”
