Welcome to Tanzania – but keep your Plastic at Home!

Tanzania’s Government has banned plastic in the country. Tourists at arrival need to drop bags.

As of now, travelers arriving in Tanzania will find friendly reminders and signposts at the airport instructing them to bin any plastic packaging. Exceptions: Medical equipment, industrial wrapping and zip-log toiletry bags – so long as they take them back home after their visit.

Tanzania is the second tourist destination after Kenya with super strict anti-plastic laws. Anyone using plastic bags faces fines of up to 430,000 US-Dollars. Anyone manufacturing them faces up to two years in prison.

Tanzania’s president John Magufull recently demonstrated how to deal with the no-plastic task: he went old school and took a wicker basket to a busy local fish market in the capital Dar Es Salaam.
