Wetland Conservation Success for (Many!) Cities Across the World

Thirty-one new cities have been recognized for sustainably managing and conserving their urban wetlands.

“By protecting, restoring, and wisely using their wetlands, these cities are enhancing their resilience to climate change and improving quality of life for their residents,” says Dr Musonda Mumba, the Secretary General of the Convention on wetlands.

Wetland conservation is essential for long-term sustainability and is known to help cities with flood mitigation, water purification, and enhanced biodiversity. The Wetland City Accreditation recently awarded the cities of Trelew, Argentina; Mechelen, Belgium; Nagoya City, Japan; Novi Sad, Serbia; and Geneva, Switzerland, among many others. On top of the 31 newly-accredited cities, 18 others have received renewed accreditation for their continued efforts. The Wetland City Accreditation has awarded 74 cities across 27 countries for their outstanding sustainability practices that highlight the importance of global urban wetlands.
