100 Million Doses of Corona Vaccines Available for Low and Middle Income Countries by Next Year

As early as the first half of 2021, 100 million doses of corona vaccines will be delivered to low and middle-income countries (LMICs), thanks to the partnership of the Serum Institute of India (SII), Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“Too many times we’ve seen the most vulnerable countries left at the back of the queue when it comes to new treatments, new diagnostics and new vaccines,” says Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Adar Poonawalla, CEO of SII, adds that “through this association, we seek to ramp up our constant efforts to save the lives of millions of people from this dreadful disease.”

Efforts are made for every country, not only the wealthy few, to be protected so international trade, commerce, and society are kept safe as a whole. A list of 92 countries will be supported by the AMC. “This collaboration gives the world a tremendous manufacturing capacity and a global distribution network. It’s just a start. Organizations need much more support to facilitate development and delivery of hundreds of millions – maybe billions – of vaccine doses by next year,” says Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
