$200 Million Initiative to Protect Nature and Support Communities

Gabon has launched a major conservation initiative aiming to mobilise up to $200 million over the next decade to protect biodiversity and improve rural livelihoods.

“Our vision is clear: beyond simply leveraging our natural resources, we are placing people and our communities firmly at the heart of development,” says Herman Immongault, Gabon’s Vice-President of the Government.

Developed in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and Enduring Earth, the Gabon Infini initiative plans to establish 3.7 million hectares of new protected areas and improve the management of approximately 3.8 million hectares already protected. With tropical forests covering 88% of the country, the programme will support sustainable forestry, ecotourism, wildlife protection and climate adaptation while creating economic opportunities for local communities. It will also advance the country’s commitment to protect 30% of its terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems by 2030.
