54 Cities Race to Meet Climate Target – and Are Well on Track

According to the action plans, major cities proposed, the Paris Climate Agreement target should be achieved. Furthermore, once fully implemented, these plans will protect citizens, create jobs, address inequalities, and, of course, tackle the global climate crisis.

“Cities have always carried the torch of climate action, because our residents can’t afford the costs of indifference and the consequences of delay,” says Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles and Chair of C40 that released a new analysis regarding action plans from 54 cities.

“The more we do to support the work cities are doing, the faster we’ll make progress globally, and C40 will continue finding new ways to do that – and new partners in the public and private sectors who share our commitment,” adds Michael R. Bloomberg, C40 Board President, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies and Bloomberg LP

Per the Paris Agreement signed five years ago, cities had until the end of 2020 to present their plan to limit the rise of the global temperatures to 1.5°C by curbing their greenhouse gas emissions. Cities put their best foot forward to prevent at least 1.9 gigatons of GHG emissions from being released into the atmosphere between 2020 and 2030. For example, Buenos Aires will plant 100,000 trees by 2025 to help clean the air, Lisbon will multiply its production of solar energy by 2030 to end energy poverty, and in Johannesburg, by 2030, all new buildings will operate at net zero carbon, thus generating hundreds of jobs.
