Pop-up Bike Lanes Make Cycling Safer in Corona Times

Cities across Germany are creating “pop-up” cycle lanes to help more people commute to where they need to be while maintaining the nation’s social distancing requirements complementing the coronavirus lockdown.

“The coronavirus is showing us that clean air is an indispensable asset,” says Jürgen Resch, chair of Environmental Action Germany. “It is now especially important … for people to move safely on their bikes. This will help improve air quality, enables exercise in fresh air while keeping a safe distance and avoids unnecessary accidents.”

The Kreuzberg district in Berlin, for example, has temporarily widened two cycle lanes late last month, to help cyclists stay 1.5 meters apart as required according to Germany’s current COVID-19 restrictions.
