The World’s Largest Floating Solar Power Plant Is in the Works

An impressive floating solar power plant will be built off the coast of the Indonesian island of Batam, the largest of its kind, providing clean energy and jobs to local citizens.

“This single project will double our entire portfolio, more importantly build our capability towards hyperscale solar and energy storage projects,” says Frank Phuan, co-founder and chief executive of Sunseap Group. “Floating solar systems will go a long way to address the land constraints that urbanized parts of Southeast Asia face in tapping renewable energy.”

Some 3,000 local workers will take part in the construction of the 1,600-hectare photovoltaic system built in the Duriangkang reservoir. With an output of 2.2 gigawatts and an energy storage system with a capacity of more than 4,000 MWh, it will be the largest power plant of its kind in the world. The construction will start in 2022 and should be completed by 2024.
