Rubella Eliminated, Future Generations Protected

Nepal has officially eliminated rubella, a childhood disease that can cause severe birth defects if contracted during pregnancy. The achievement is a milestone for public health and a victory for families across the country.

“Nepal’s success reflects the unwavering commitment of its leadership, the persistent efforts of healthcare workers and volunteers, and the support of engaged communities,” said Dr Catharina Boehme of WHO South-East Asia.

The country introduced the rubella vaccine in 2012, added a second dose in 2016, and ran national immunisation campaigns in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024. Despite earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 95% of children now receive the vaccine, well above the level needed to stop outbreaks. Nepal is the sixth country in the region to eliminate rubella and the first to roll out advanced testing systems to catch new cases quickly. The success shows what steady commitment and community action can achieve, offering a roadmap for other countries still battling the disease.
