Local Partnerships Expand Protection for Critical Wildlife Corridors

Nearly one million hectares of forests and highlands are now protected through new locally led conservation areas, with Bolivia strengthening ecological connectivity and safeguarding biodiversity.

“In many cases, municipalities have now protected more than half their territories, showing how local leadership can deliver durable conservation that strengthens communities,” said Eduardo Forno, vice president of Conservation International–Bolivia.

Four new protected areas cover about 907,000 hectares across the Amazon and Andean regions, linking Indigenous territories with national parks, supporting wildlife migration and forest-based livelihoods such as Brazil nut harvesting, and advancing conservation goals and protecting species, including river dolphins and harpy eagles.
