This City Turns Parking Spaces Into Green Community Areas

By replacing on-street parking with green and public spaces, Vienna is reshaping urban streets to reduce heat, improve mobility and create more liveable neighbourhoods in Austria.

“We have to ask how people want their neighbourhood to be, filled with cars or with trees and shared spaces,” said Ina Homeier, planner at Vienna’s Department of Urban Planning and Development.

More than 350 projects have converted asphalt into parks, cycling lanes and community areas, including the removal of 140 parking spaces for a 1.3-kilometre cycling street, while paid parking policies now generate about €180 million annually for sustainable transport and have contributed to residents using cars 37% less than in the 1990s.
