Society The WorldHunger Continues to Decline Across These Regions
Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean has fallen for the fourth consecutive year, according to a new UN-backed report, which shows steady progress in improving food security across the region.
“The region managed to reduce the prevalence of hunger and food insecurity,” said FAO regional representative Rene Orellana Halkyer, as new data showed undernourishment dropping to 5.1% of the population in 2024, down from 6.1% in 2020 — meaning 6.2 million fewer people are experiencing hunger.
Several countries have now reached very low levels of hunger, with Brazil, Costa Rica, Guyana and Uruguay reporting rates below 2.5%, while others are approaching similar thresholds. Food insecurity has also declined steadily since 2020, and 15.4 million more people can now afford a healthy diet compared with 2021, reflecting broader improvements in food access and strengthened regional efforts to improve nutrition and resilience.
