New law expands access to balcony solar energy systems

Colorado in the United States has passed new legislation allowing more residents in apartments and multi-family buildings to install balcony solar panels and lower their electricity costs.

“Just because you live in an apartment or multi-family building doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to use solar panels to save money on your energy bill,” said Jared Polis, Governor of Colorado.

The new law, which takes effect in January 2027, prevents utilities, landlords, and homeowner associations from unreasonably blocking plug-in solar systems. Balcony solar panels are small-scale systems that can be mounted on railings, patios, or walls and connected to household circuits to reduce grid electricity use. Colorado is the second US state to formally approve the technology, which supporters say can make renewable energy more accessible for renters and apartment residents who cannot install rooftop panels. Systems are limited to under 2 kW and can be paired with battery storage to improve grid reliability and provide backup power during outages.
