New Offshore Wind Rules Support Clean Energy and Wildlife

New legislation in the United Kingdom is helping to accelerate offshore wind development while introducing stronger, more flexible measures to protect and restore marine ecosystems.

“As we build the clean energy infrastructure our country needs, these reforms mean that we can also deliver real, lasting benefits for nature, from restoring native oyster beds to protecting seabird colonies for future generations,” said Emma Hardy, Marine Minister.

The reforms expand the range of environmental compensation measures available to offshore wind developers, allowing projects to support conservation initiatives such as seabird habitat protection, predator control and native oyster restoration. The new approach is designed to enable renewable energy growth and marine conservation to progress together while supporting national clean power goals for 2030. Industry and environmental stakeholders say the changes will reduce delays, improve conservation outcomes and encourage a more strategic approach to protecting nature as the country expands its renewable energy capacity.
