Regional Energy Network Expands Access to Electricity

Millions of people across West Africa are gaining more reliable and affordable electricity through an expanding regional power network that is improving energy access, creating jobs and strengthening long-term development.

“A true pillar of sub-regional and regional integration and cooperation, the OMVG interconnection provides continuous, secure and affordable electricity supply for all,” said Demba Jallow, High Commissioner of the OMVG.

More than 4,000 kilometres of high-voltage transmission lines now connect the electricity grids of 15 countries, allowing around 8% of regional electricity to be traded across borders, improving reliability and reducing costs. Between 2019 and 2025, more than 3 million people gained access to electricity through network upgrades across six countries, while the programme also supported more than 52,000 direct and indirect jobs and helped improve the financial stability of national utilities through lower-cost hydropower and regional cooperation.
