New Water Rules Strengthen Pollution Protection

The European Union has brought new water protection laws into force, introducing stronger safeguards against harmful pollutants and helping build cleaner, more resilient water systems across Europe.

“Clean water matters for people’s health, for our environment, and for our economy,” said Jessika Roswall, Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy. “It is one of the smartest investments we can make, and it will pay off many times over.”

The updated legislation revises water quality standards based on the latest scientific evidence and adds new pollutants to monitoring and control lists, including certain PFAS chemicals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. For the first time, the rules also address microplastics, indicators of antimicrobial resistance and sensitive groundwater ecosystems. A new monitoring approach will assess the combined effects of pollutants, providing a more comprehensive picture of water quality. Member States have until December 2027 to implement the measures, which are expected to strengthen environmental protection, improve public health and support the EU’s long-term water resilience and zero-pollution goals.
